AED Program AnnouncementThe Health Center has implemented an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program. The aim of this program is to make early defibrillation immediately available in cardiac emergencies. An AED is used to treat victims who experience sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). It is only applied to victims who are unconscious, not breathing normally, and showing no signs of circulation. The AED will analyze the heart rhythm and advise the operator if a shockable rhythm is detected. SCA can happen anywhere, anytime. SCA is usually caused by an electrical malfunction that makes the heart quiver ineffectively. When this occurs, CPR is not enough to reverse this quiver. CPR is a potentially life-saving temporary mechanical measure that helps maintain blood flow. A pulse of electricity, defibrillation, is the only treatment and must be delivered quickly to restore the heart’s normal rhythm. Because every minute counts when SCA strikes, AEDs have been placed in two key locations at the Marysville campus. One AED is located in the Health Center in building 100B in room 122. The other AED is located in the Athletic Department’s office in building 1200. Part of the AED program plan is to obtain AEDs for the Woodland and Clearlake campuses in the future. An AED/CPR Refresher training course was provided for the Yuba College AED Team to ensure each member is well prepared with the appropriate skills to utilize an AED with confidence. The AEDs on campus are fully automated and after the AED analyzes the heart’s rhythm it will not deliver a shock if it is not indicated. You may click here to view the AED Policies and Procedures.
