Group Counselor I is the entry level class of this series, initially under close supervision the person selected will perform
basic intake, orientation, security and oversight of juveniles, while learning County policies and intervention and counseling
techniques. Group Counselor II is the journey level class, fully competent to perform a variety of responsible work with
juveniles during an assigned shift at Juvenile Hall and/or the Youth Guidance Center or with adults or juveniles on a work
release program. Responsibilities include monitoring and enforcing the safety, security, treatment, education and other
activities for Juvenile Hall and/or Youth Guidance Center detainees; monitoring and enforcing sentencing rules and
regulations; searching juveniles for contraband, weapons and other prohibited materials; restraining physically abusive
detainees; transporting detainees; performing intake duties such as receiving, preparing and processing appropriate
documents, recording and securing valuables; and providing juveniles information regarding their legal rights and
performing related work as assigned.
Both positions require the ability to act promptly and effectively in emergency situations, write comprehensive reports,
administer first aid, establish/maintain effective working relationships and successfully complete a comprehensive in-service
training program. Additionally, Group Counselor II requires knowledge of the principles and practices used in juvenile
detention and/or adult work release or alternative programs; applicable laws, regulations and rules; principles and practices
of juvenile counseling and behavior modification and safety practices and procedures related to a detention facility. Skills in
assessing and evaluating the needs and risks of juvenile detainees; directing individuals assigned to a work release
program; enforcing rules and safety regulations and using initiative and independent judgment within established
procedures are essential.

Group Counselor I:
Minimum: Equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college (60 semester units) with major course work in
psychology, administration of justice/criminology, sociology, general studies or a related field.
Group Counselor II:
Minimum: Equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college (60 semester units) with major course work in
psychology, administration of justice/criminology, sociology, general studies or a related field and at least one (1) year
experience in counseling and overseeing juveniles in a detention facility at a level equivalent to the County's class of
Group Counselor I and successful completion of Juvenile Counselor Core curriculum approved by Standards of Training
and Corrections.
Special Requirements: Both positions must meet the State of California requirements for peace officer status, including
passing a detailed background investigation with a fingerprint check, having no felony convictions, passing a medical and
